Stencilman had his friends at "We Do Lines" striping company send some photos of the new airport stencils being used at Logan Airport in Boston, MA. The We Do Lines crew used a combination of 12-Foot Stencils and 42" stencils to mark specific numbers and letters around several of the gates. The taxiway stencils were cut on a durable and rigid 60 mil ABS plastic which came in handy during the cold temperatures.

If you are intertesting in painting number stencils on curbs, this 55-piece stencil kit represents a true value. Interlocking stencils are prespaced and go together like puzzle pieces. The monospace stencil font is generally the best style for marking words or stenciling numbers on most surfaces. Typical curb numbers and street stencils use this monospace style. Here are some basic diagrams showing the interlocking stencils going together:

This particular brand of interlocking stencils from stencilease.com is called Quadra Lock and is the only interlocking stencil system to lock in all four directions. This allows for vertical stenciling jobs and is a very handy feature to have in a stencil set. The number stencil sets come with 25 pieces and include 2 of every number, 2 dashes and 3 spacers. The alphabet stencil sets come with 40 pieces that include extra letters, A, E, I, L, M, N, O, P, R, S and T. These extra number and letter pieces make a huge difference.

The letter and number sets start at 3" ( actual character height) and go up to 36" for both alphabet stencil kits and number stencil kits. The stencils are made from a durable plastic that is laser cut for precise character height and perfectly smooth edge quality. Sizes 3" through 15" are cut on 40 mil material and the larger 16" through 36" are cut on 60 mil material. Both are durable and reusable. Here are some simple steps and instructions for storm drain stenciling:
1) Get permission from your city public works office, town officials or business owners in private parking lots before stenciling storm drains. 2) Gather all supplies needed for the project including:
a. Your choice of Stencil Ease storm drain stencil templatesb. Marking paints or a good non-spray alternative like our one-shot ink rollers. (Inks come in black, white, red, orange, yellow, green and blue cartridges) Marking paints should be fast-drying, acrylic and used inverted (spray with can upside down) Some brands are Krylon, Rust-Oleum, Emedcoc. Tools to clean the drain area before stenciling like wire brushes, brooms, etc.d. Map of storm drain areas from public works department or town water companye. Stencil Adhesive Spray to keep stencil securely in place while using ink roller or spray can. If it is windy, you may want additional tape to hold the stencil in place while applying paint. f. Pieces of cardboard to practice stenciling on before application. (cardboard can also be used to transport a wet stencil) This will ensure that you are applying the right amount of paint. Many first time stencilers will use too much ink or paint on the roller (the same with spray paints). Less paint/ink is better and will look better overall. You are much better off with one light coat, let it dry and then apply a second coat to darken paint or ink if needed.
3) Make sure you do the stenciling project on a sunny, dry day between 40 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Make sure the surface you are stenciling has been swept clean with a brush or broom or even cleaned with a wire brush for hard to remove dirts, oils, tars, etc. Pick up any trash in the area around the drain.4) Place stencil on surface (you may want to use the stencil adhesive spray on the back of the stencil first) and make sure this is where you want the lettering and image to go. Apply spray paint or ink roller. Remember Less paint/ink is better and will look better overall. You are much better off with one light coat, let it dry and then apply a second coat to darken paint or ink if needed5) After storm drain stencil is completed, lift stencil off surface and place wet stencil in between two sheets of cardboard to carry to next drain. It is OK to let the paint or ink dry completely on the stencil. Most paints can flake off by rolling the stencil after they have completely dried. The inks will not build up on the stencil as thick as acrylic paints and can handle more applications. If you still wish to clean the stencil after multiple ink applications, try anything from simple green to solvent-based cleaners.

This is the largest athletic field stencil kit I have seen yet. 72" Numbers 0,1,2,3,4,5 along with a 72" G and matching arrow symbol stencil. These are laser cut on extremely durable and heavy weight 60-mil plastic. We have found this material is excellent for spray painting stencils whether using cans or a commercial sprayers.

One very useful component to this kit is a 15-foot hash mark stencil. This is cut on 14-mil material and can be easily unrolled to mark each yard line. After spraying all the hash marks, simply pick up the stencil and move it to the next 10-yard line. When spray painting stencils, the heavier the plastic material the better the job will come out. If the material is too thin, say 7 mil material (unless you use adhesive backed material), the aerosol spray can puff up the plastic and overspray will occur. I suggest using 10 mil, 14 mil, 40 mil or 60 mil material for pure spray stencil applications and again the heaver the better, especially when using stencils in windy conditions. On the other side, if you will not be using the stencil with spray paint you can get away with almost any thickness. Ink rollers, paint with high density foam rollers, stencil brushes and other tools can be used easily with 7 mil, 10 mil and adhesive backed films. Stencil Ease offers five different plastic materials from 7 mil up to 60 mil for most industrial, custom and decorative stencils.
